Biogas storage in Italian Alps
Client/Investor: Biogas technology a.s., CZ/Bezirksgemeinschaft Burggrafenland, I
Contractor: OKZ HOLDING a.s., CZ
Location: Lana, Italy
Subject: Gasholder construction works
Storage capacity: 1 x 400 m3
Initiated: 05/2005
Completed: 06/2005

According to new European requirements for renewable sources of energy it has been a revolutionary trend to acquire energy from gases released by decomposing wastes.

OKZ HOLDING a.s. together with a specialized professional company BIOGAS TECHNOLOGY a.s., who delivers technologies for anoxic processing of sludge and organic wastes connected to use of biogas, have been cooperating in deliveries of components for these technologies for many years.

In Lana, Italy such a project was built in cooperation with the described partner. A gas tank of 400 m3 was built as a part of technology complex for processing of recycled biological waste (mainly from nearby cafeterias and restaurants). The gas tank was built on the premises of a storage area for sorted waste.

The production of individual sections of the steel construction and technological segments took place in the production plant of OKZ in Vlašim, CZ and such preprocessed segments were transported to the site. The assembly of the gas tank was performed by only 6 workers. The assembly was performed using a tower crane. Despite intense heat (up to 35°C in the shade and 44°C temperature of metal sheets) the assembly including construction of specialized elements and a special rubber membrane and including coating finished in 4 weeks. The gas tank technology consists of storage tanks, screw conveyors, a fermentor, grinders of waste, rotting tank, gas tank, biogas powered engines and connecting piping. The power generators are connected to the power network. The gasholder accumulates gas and feeds the generator and it ensures required high pressure 3,5 kPa). It consists of steel tank, steel structure of rippled sheets, a telescope, floating roof, fixed roof, fuse and a membrane.

It is of interest that besides classical use of welding with a coated electrode a semi automated welding process MAG with a coated electrode was used. All welds of the shell and the bottom were executed using the method. Hence it was possible to shorten the welding time by 1/3.
